YOUTH MUSIC SCHOLARSHIP RECOGNIZES FOUR LOCAL PIANO STUDENTS
June 12, 2009 – The Community Choir, Inc.’s George G. Rink Memorial scholarship recently funded individual master class sessions with visiting pianist Peter Basquin for four young musicians.
The sessions, held in late May in conjunction with Basquin’s May 24 appearance in the Church on the Hill concert series in Berkeley Springs, offered the young instrumentalists the opportunity to perform for and be coached by the renowned concert pianist.
Lydia Griffiths, Laurel Worley and Nathan Worley of Berkeley Springs, W.Va. and Merrick Jensen of Hagerstown, Md. were nominated for the George G. Rink Memorial scholarship by their piano instructor, Patricia Springer. The four teenage pianists each performed one or two classical selections for Basquin and a small, but appreciative audience, then received individual critique and coaching from the master teacher.
“The Community Choir, Inc. was happy to offer these talented young musicians the opportunity to study their craft with a master instrumentalist,” said acting Community Choir Board Chair Bill North. “The George G. Rink Memorial Scholarship is made possible through the contributions of individuals and organizations – in Morgan County and beyond – that believe that musical and artistic training is essential to the development of lifelong skills that prepare young people for successful careers in the arts, education, and social services.”
The George G. Rink Memorial scholarship was established earlier this year by The Community Choir’s Board of Directors in memory of one of the Choir’s founding members. The scholarship recognizes promising young local musicians ages 12 – 19 who are pursuing instrumental or vocal training, music theory, composition, or conducting studies.

BERKELEY SPRINGS, West Va., March 30, 2009 – The Community Choir, Inc. today announced that local violinist James Worley has been named the first recipient of the organization’s George G. Rink Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship, established earlier this year by The Community Choir’s Board of Directors in memory of one of the Choir’s founding members, recognizes promising young local musicians ages 12 – 19 who are pursuing instrumental or vocal training, music theory, composition or conducting studies.
Community Choir Chairperson Doris Ashmore and former Chairperson Doris Rink made the scholarship presentation to 16 year-old James Worley during the Living Springs Chorale’s March 29 concert in Berkeley Springs.
“The Community Choir, Inc. is pleased to have this opportunity to recognize James for his musical talents and to assist him in his continued studies,” said Ashmore. “The George G. Rink Memorial Scholarship is made possible through the contributions of individuals and organizations – in Morgan County and beyond – that believe that musical and artistic training is essential to the development of lifelong skills that prepare young people for successful careers in the arts, education, and social services.”
James Worley, a home-schooled 11th grader, has studied the violin since the age of four and has performed during a number of Living Springs Chorale concerts. In addition to his instrumental performances, he sings with the Living Springs Chorale and will perform at the Chorale’s next concert on Sunday, April 5 at 3 p.m. at the Berkeley Springs Presbyterian Church on Mercer Street. James plans to use the scholarship award toward attendance at a music camp this summer.

BERKELEY SPRINGS, West Va., Dec. 29, 2008 – The Community Choir, Inc. (www.thecommunitychoir.org) today announced that the Living Springs Chorale and the Sleepy Creek Children’s Choir will begin preparations for their spring concert season in January.
The Living Springs Chorale
The Living Springs Chorale, Morgan County’s own community choir, will hold its first rehearsal for the spring season on Tuesday, January 20 at 7 p.m. Rehearsals are held weekly in the Fellowship Hall of the Berkeley Springs Presbyterian Church, located at 97 Mercer Street in Berkeley Springs. Concert dates and venues for the Living Springs Chorale’s spring performances will be announced in the coming weeks.
The 30 + voice ensemble, now in its seventh season, is sponsored by the Community Choir, Inc. and directed by Lydia Walker. The volunteer choral group is open to singers of high school age through mature years. Prerequisites include love of classical and spiritual choral music, some previous singing experience, and commitment to 10-11 weekly rehearsals, in addition to concerts.

The Living Springs Chorale Enters Seventh Season
The Living Springs Chorale, Morgan County’s own community choir, will hold its first rehearsal for the fall season on Tuesday, September 16 at 7 p.m. Rehearsals are held weekly in the Fellowship Hall of the Berkeley Springs Presbyterian Church, located at 97 Mercer Street in Berkeley Springs.
The Living Springs Chorale is planning three or four holiday season concerts in December, all in the Berkeley Springs-Great Cacapon area. Past December concerts have featured choral masterpieces by Handel, Bach and Rutter, as well as contemporary composers and many traditional holiday pieces.
The 30 + voice ensemble, now in its seventh season, is sponsored by the Community Choir, Inc. and directed by Lydia Walker. The volunteer choral group is open to singers of high school age through mature years. Sleepy Creek Children's Choir Enters Third Season, Expands to Three Choirs
The Sleepy Creek Children’s Choir, under the direction of Denise Cline and Margi Griffiths, will kick off their third season with a Fall Choir Workshop on Saturday, September 13 from 3-5 p.m. at Berkeley Springs Presbyterian Church, located at 97 Mercer Street in Berkeley Springs. Children ages 5-18 with all ability levels are welcome to attend and meet other children who share their love of music and singing.
The Sleepy Creek Children’s Choir will hold registration for the fall season on Thursday, September 18 at 7 p.m. at the Berkeley Springs Presbyterian Church on Mercer Street. Registration Night is a wonderful opportunity for both parents and singers to learn more about the choir and planned activities for the fall. Registration is $15 per child or $20 per family.
The SCCC offers two choirs for children, the Primary Choir for ages 5-8 and the Intermediate Choir ages 9-12. The Primary and Intermediate Choirs rehearse on Thursdays from 4:30-5:30 p.m. at the Berkeley Springs Presbyterian Church.

LOCAL CHOIR, ENVIRONMENTAL GROUPS AND BUSINESSES TO COMMEMORATE EARTH DAY WEEK WITH CONCERT AND EDUCATIONAL EXHIBITS
BERKELEY SPRINGS, West Va., April 14, 2008 – The Living Springs Chorale, a mixed voice ensemble under the direction of Lydia Walker and accompanied by Rose Ann Glover, will present an afternoon of music and environmental awareness on Sunday, April 27, 3 p.m. in the Berkeley Springs High School auditorium in Berkeley Springs, West Va.
The concert, titled “Voices of the Earth: Songs of the Creator – Songs of the Creation” is sponsored by The Community Choir, Inc., in collaboration with the Ecology Coalition of Morgan County (eCo), and concludes The Community Choir’s week-long commemoration of Earth Day. A number of local environmental groups and environmentally-conscious businesses will be on hand with ecology and conservation displays and information before and after the concert. Both the concert and the exhibits are open to the public and free of charge.
“The Living Springs Chorale is very happy to have this opportunity to partner with eCo to present this program,” said Lydia Walker, the Chorale’s artistic director. “We share a concern for the health of the planet and a desire to inform and inspire fellow citizens, friends and neighbors and visitors to appreciate the beauty of our natural resources, encouraging good stewardship of our land, our forests and our rivers.”
The Living Springs Chorale’s concert will offer musical selections and readings selected to honor the Earth and the Creator. “We have chosen a variety of pieces, ranging from traditional compositions, such as arrangements of “America the Beautiful” and “Shenandoah”, to contemporary works by John Rutter and Aaron Copland,” said Walker. “Each piece celebrates the beauties of nature and reminds us of our obligation to conserve and protect the environment for our children’s children to enjoy.” The choir and accompanist Glover will be joined on several of the program’s pieces by local instrumentalists Anne Helmick (flute), Ian Helmick (percussion), Tula Ruggiero (harp) and Patricia Springer (piano).
A number of local non-profit and public service organizations, as well as environmentally- conscious businesses will demonstrate their support of Earth Day week by providing free exhibits and information prior to and following the Living Springs Chorale concert. In their role of co-sponsor, eCo will join these local groups and businesses with informational displays:
