The Community Choir History at a glance
 
1990’s


Community Choir forms as an offshoot of local church choirs to perform religious music. Choir consists of 30 – 35 voices and is conducted by Wayne Shade with taped accompaniment

2001



Choir maintains membership, expands to include instrumental accompaniment. Kimberly Jensen is conductor. Choir forms Steering Committee to oversee business of the choir. The Community Choir performs Spring and Winter concerts in Paw Paw and Berkeley Springs, West Va. and Hancock, Md.

2003



Choir conducts search for artistic director, hires Lydia Walker and Rachel Binger as assistant conductor and Laura Meachem as rehearsal and performance accompanist. The Community Choir performs Spring and Winter concerts in Paw Paw and Berkeley Springs, West Va. and Hancock, Md.

2005


Choir re-forms as a registered non-profit 501 (c) 3 organization, establishes Board of Directors to set strategy and policy. The Community Choir performs Spring and Winter concerts in Berkeley Springs and Great Cacapon, West Va.

2006





Choir dissolves Steering Committee. Choir hires Rose Ann Glover to serve as rehearsal and performance accompanist; expands instrumental accompaniment with local musicians and students. “Community Choir” is renamed “Living Springs Chorale”; the umbrella organization retains the name “The Community Choir, Inc.” The Living Springs Chorale performs Spring and Winter concerts in Berkeley Springs and Great Cacapon, West Va. Living Springs Chorale adds third program to schedule; presents full-length Shubert “Mass in G” in Berkeley Springs. Children’s Choir established with eight members under direction of Denise Cline.

2007






April: Children’s Choir sings with Living Springs Chorale in Spring concert
May: Children’s Choir sings for Autumn Acres and Berkeley Springs Nursing and Rehab
August: The Sleepy Creek Children’s Choir hosts a free one-day music workshop for local children
September: Children’s Choir launches second season under new name -- “Sleepy Creek Children’s Choir” -- grows to 24 members and two choirs – Intermediate and Primary.
October: Sleepy Creek Children’s Choir performs at Celtic Music Festival in Berkeley Springs, WVa.

2008









April: The Community Choir, Inc. partners with Morgan County Ecology Coalition to present special Earth Day Week concerts.
April: Sleepy Creek Children’s Choir presents first stand-alone concert as part of Red Bud Weekend.
May: Living Springs Chorale performs at dedication of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church’s new sanctuary.
May: Sleepy Creek Children’s Choir performs at Autumn Acres and Berkeley Springs Rehabilitation Center.
September: Sleepy Creek Children’s Choir expands to add third choir – Youth Chorale; hires Margi Griffiths as associate director & The Sleepy Creek Children’s Choir hosts their 2nd annual free one-day music workshop for local children
October: Sleepy Creek Children’s Choir performs at Celtic Music Festival in Berkeley Springs, WVa. December 2008 The Living Springs Chorale and the Sleepy Creek Children’s Choir perform three concerts in Morgan County. The concerts feature the debut of the new Youth Chorale

2009









March: The Community Choir, Inc. establishes the George G. Rink Memorial Scholarship for youth music education and names first recipient. Community Choir Chairperson Doris Ashmore and former Chairperson Doris Rink made the scholarship presentation to 16 year-old violinist James Worley.
March: The Living Springs Chorale presents two Spring Concerts in Berkeley Springs
April: The Sleepy Creek Children’s Choir and the Sleepy Creek Youth Chorale present their second annual Spring Concert in Berkeley Springs
May: The Sleepy Creek Children’s Choir performs at Autumn Acres and Berkeley Springs Rehabilitation Center
May: The Community Choir, Inc.’s George G. Rink Memorial Scholarship funds individual master class sessions for four local piano students – Lydia Griffiths, Merrick Jensen, Laurel Worley and Nathan Worley -- with renowned concert pianist Peter Basquin
June: The Sleepy Creek Children’s Choir hosts their 3rd annual free one-day music workshop for local children
